WHITTIER, Calif. -- Lisa Kumasaka finished 6 of 8 in the doubleheader as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost both to the Whittier Poets on Sunday at Palmer Field.
Game 1 - Whittier 6, Lewis & Clark 2
Kumasaka tripled to lead off the fourth inning before Emily Drevdahl's single brought her in. The triple was Kumasaka's first career extra-base hit. Ariel Trinidad hit an RBI single two batters later to help the Pios cut into Whittier's lead, 5-2.
Kaili Akimseu took her second loss of the season after pitching 2 1/3 innings and allowing five runs, four of which were earned. Kalin Rooney finished the game and allowed three hits and one run in 3 2/3 innings.
Lindsay Yearman went 2 for 3 in the game.
Samantha Blum earned the win for Whittier after pitching 3 1/3 innings of three-hit ball. Natalia Sanchez and Sierra Rodriguez had multi-hit games.
Game 2 - Whittier 2, Lewis & Clark 1
Brooke Koran hit a double down the leftfield line in the third inning, and Katelyn Duilio scored as a pinch runner when Zoe Juarez reached on an error to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Savannah Dickson started and pitched 3 1/3 innings. She allowed two runs, both unearned. Whittier's Natalia Sanchez doubled to score Marialena Ahern in the third before Danica Cooley scored in the fourth to give the Poets the 2-1 lead. Dickson (0-2) allowed four hits, walked three and struck out one. Rooney replaced her and threw 2 1/3 innings without giving up a hit.
Blum pitched seven more innings for Whittier, earning her second win of the day.
Kumasaka added three hits to the day, bringing her total to six hits in eight at-bats. She finished with a .429 batting average after her first collegiate weekend of play. Stephanie Garcia was 4 of 11 from the plate over the Pios' four games to open the season.
Lewis & Clark begins Northwest Conference games on Saturday in Spokane, Wash. against Whitworth.
