LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers scored a run in each game to lose their season-opening doubleheader to the Biola Eagles on Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond. Although the Pioneers were able to stay close in the first game, losing 4-1, the Eagles won the second game, 8-1.
Pioneers freshman Ariel Trinidad and senior Lindsay Yearman had the only runs of the day.
In the opener, senior Kalin Rooney was the starting pitcher and was relieved after five innings and 85 pitches by Emily Drevdahl, who pitched for one inning. Rooney had one strikeout, and the pair combined for four runs against.
Trinidad had the single score in the first game, while teammates Yearman and Stephanie Garcia also had hits. Scoring in the fifth inning, Trinidad singled to left field with one out. Ateisha Norton, acting as pinch hitter, walked and advanced Trinidad to second. Garcia, also pinch-hitting, singled, advancing to second on an error by the Biola right fielder Kirstin Gutierrez, which allowing Trinidad to score.
Yearman scored in the second inning off of a walk for the second game's only score. Stealing second on the next batter, she eventually ran in off of a Kaili Akimseu single down the rightfield line.
Akimseu also started the game at pitcher, throwing 53 strikes before Savannah Dickson threw for 2 1/3 innings. The two combined for five strikeouts.
Leading the Eagles, Kayla Neff played three different positions as she ended the doubleheader 4-for-7 with a run scored.
The Pioneers are scheduled to play two games against Cal Lutheran on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
