NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team built an eight-point lead against an undefeated George Fox squad, but the Bruins came alive in the third quarter for a comeback 72-57 victory over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Pios used a 10-3 run midway through the second quarter to go up by 10 points over the Bruins. Kaitlin Matthewson made a lay-in with 1:17 remaining in the half to make the score 34-24 and give Lewis & Clark its largest lead of the game. George Fox's Justine Benner made one of two free throws just before the break to cut the Bruins' deficit to 35-27.

George Fox started the second half on a 12-4 run to regain the lead and the Bruins never gave it back. The Pioneers aided George Fox's run by turning the ball over six times in just over four minutes of game play.

The Bruins took their biggest lead of the contest at 68-47 on a layup by Kaycee Creech with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter.

Justin Benner scored a game-high 24 points to lead George Fox (21-0; 12-0 NWC). Sammy Naluai added 14.

Lewis & Clark (2-19; 1-11 NWC) was led by Natalie Kelly, who finished with 14 points to pace three Pios in double figures. Rachel Cox netted 13 points for the Pioneers and Miyah Leith contributed 10. Ayisat Afolabi pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for Lewis & Clark and blocked four shots.

The Pioneers will host Linfield at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Lewis & Clark defeated Linfield 53-52 in McMinnville on Jan. 12 for its only Northwest Conference victory of the season.
