Double-double in season opener not enough for women's basketball

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A double-double by senior forward Ayisat Afolabi couldn't elevate the Pioneers to a win against the Corban Warriors in their season opener at Pamplin Sports Center. Lewis & Clark (1-0) was within two points with less than two minutes left in the game, but came away with a 60-56 loss.

The Pioneers had a low scoring first quarter, only grabbing six points. The game started off slow, with the first score of the game coming in the eighth minute, a jumper by senior guard Deja Nicholas, playing in her second year at Lewis & Clark. Fellow senior Sarah Anderson made 2-2 of her free throws in the first quarter, contributing to her total 11 points of the night, all scored in the first half.

A 52.9 percent field goal percentage in the second quarter helped the Pioneers to take the lead off an Anderson 3-pointer in the 28th minute. Anderson was 3-4 on 3-pointers in the first half, leading Lewis & Clark to take the lead at the end of the the period, coming away with a season-high 23 team points scored in the quarter.

Afolabi came to play in the second half for the Pioneers, 6-10 of field goals with a total of 13 points and 7 rebounds. A layup by the Warriors (4-0) tied up the game with seven minutes left in the third quarter, but Lewis & Clark held onto the lead until the last minute of the quarter.

Five steals in the second half contributed to a defensive surge by the Pioneers, bringing them within two points of the Warriors with 1:40 left in the game. Unable to come back from the deficit, Lewis & Clark added four fouls to their stats in the last minute, before a last second layup by Afoladi brought the Pioneers within four to end the game.

Junior Miyah Leith scored 11, while fellow junior Lauren Wood ended the night with 8 points. Both posted four boards. Afolabi ended the game with a total of 10 rebounds and 15 points.

The Pioneers return to the court Friday at 7 p.m. to take on Northwest at Pamplin Sports Center.
