Pios fight off a rally, stay perfect in NWC

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark built a two-set lead after a 12-point, second set win, and then held off a rally by Pacific in the fifth before closing out the Boxers 25-23, 25-13, 24-26, 18-25, 15-11 at the Pamplin Sports Center on Saturday night.

The victory helped the Pioneers to a 2-0 start in the Northwest Conference with a third-straight home game coming up on Friday against Pacific Lutheran.

After the Pios outhit Pacific .300 to minus-.038 in the second set, the visiting Boxers scored the final four points of the third game to stay alive. 

The roles seemed reversed in the fourth, as Pacific held Lewis & Clark to a .031 hitting percentage, while posting .304 to even the match after four. 

Both teams had a chance to win in the final set. Trailing 5-4, the Pios scored ten of the next 11 points and built a 14-6 lead. Kills from Tiare Kaopua and Morgan Mendicino, along with two Lewis & Clark attack errors, brought the Boxers within 14-11 before Emily Farnham's fifth serve of the set went long and out, securing Lewis & Clark's victory.

Three players went into double-digit kills for Lewis & Clark, led by Ali Carleton and Julia Somers' 11 apiece. Maeleen Hopeau made it back-to-back nights of 10-plus kills, following her 14-kill performance on Friday against George Fox with 10 versus Pacific. 

Alexe Navarro continues to creep up on the all-time Lewis & Clark digs record, adding 18 more on Saturday. Somers led the team with 21 and Carleton contributed 11 more. 
Mikayla Lopez totaled 23 assists and Emily Drake added 15 more. 

Farnham led the Boxers with a match-high 31 assists, and Kaopua and Mendicino combined for 24 kills. Marie Rewick was top in digs with 19.

Overall, Lewis & Clark outhit Pacific .132-.091 and topped the Boxers in aces, 8-7. Navarro and Somers had two each for the Pioneers, and Rewick and Mendicino did the same for Paciflc.

Lewis & Clark tries to stay undefeated in conference play against Pacific Lutheran on Friday. It will also be Speciality Athletic Training night at Pamplin Sports Center.
