Softball Drops Two Close Games at Spring Break Tournament

Box Score 1

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Lewis & Clark softball team put up a fight in its two Spring Break Tournament games in Arizona, falling 5-3 after eight innings against Denison, before losing to Dubuque 4-3.

vs. DENISON
Denison took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, before increasing the advantage to 3-0 in the third.

Lewis & Clark responded in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own. The inning began with a double by Lindsay Yearman, which was followed by a Maddie Lee walk. A throwing error by Denison with the next Pio at bat allowed Yearman to come home and Haley Robinson to safely make her way on base. Tiana Rosario brought in Lee moments later with a sacrifice fly to right field.

A Denison error in the sixth allowed the Pioneers to plate the tying run on a Jenai Rojo sacrifice. The sophomore laid down a perfect bunt, which moved Stephanie Garcia to third. After throwing Rojo out at first, the Denison second baseman tried to throw Garcia out at third but aired the ball out, allowing Garcia to come home.

The two sides remained tied through seven, forcing an extra inning in which the teams played using the international tiebreaker rule. With a runner placed at second, Denison managed to plate a run thanks to a triple by Ryan Lee. The Big Red scored another run moments later with a single to right that brought in Lee.

With Kelsey Buck placed at second in the bottom half of the inning for L&C, the team managed to moved her to third but the senior would not advance any further.

vs. Dubuque
Unlike their Denison game, the Pioneers captured the lead before their opponent. Ateisha Norton earned the first RBI of the game after smacking the ball to center field, allowing Robinson to come in from third. Robinson put herself on base with a double down the right field line, before Amanda Rabith moved her to third with a single to center.

A Dubuque error in the second inning allowed Ashley Bollick to score on a Robinson at bat. The Spartans cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the third thanks to an error by the Pios.

Lewis & Clark earned the run back in the fifth with Robison coming around to score on an error by the shortstop. Robinson led off the inning with a single up the middle, before stealing second and coming home on the error.

A solo homerun in the sixth once again pulled Dubuque within a run. The Spartans headed into the final inning still trailing by a run but managed to put together a two run rally for the win.
