Late rally keeps Pios from back-to-back wins

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Leading by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers looked to be on their way to a second straight victory. A rally in the final 3:05, however, brought the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens back from a five-point deficit to beat Lewis & Clark 75-68 on Wednesday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Lewis & Clark held a 65-54 lead with just under 4:30 left in the fourth quarter, but didn't score for over three minutes after a Miyah Leith free throw. The Pioneers are now 1-1 in their three-game, four-day road trip to southern California to close out the non-conference schedule.

Basha Brulee-Wills scored 10 of Pomona-Pitzer's final 21 points to complete the comeback victory. She finished the game with 28 points on 8 of 14 shooting.

Ayisat Afolabi led the Pioneers in scoring with 19 points in her second game of the season. She played 19 minutes and gathered five rebounds before fouling out with 3:59 remaining in the game.

Natalie Kelly scored 13 points, Leith finished with 11 points and Sara Hogman had 10 points, as Lewis & Clark put four players into double figures for the second straight game.

Lewis & Clark jetted out to a sizeable 15-7 lead after Hogman made a 3-pointer with 3:02 left in the first quarter. Pomona-Pitzer narrowed the gap before the end of the quarter, scoring four of the final six points.

The final moments of the first quarter set the tempo for the Sagehens in the second period, as Pomona-Pitzer completed a 12-2 run over a four-minute span to go up 19-17 with 5:30 remaining before halftime. Afolabi put in a layup shortly after Pomona-Pitzer's last score, and shifted momentum back toward the Pios.

Lewis & Clark outscored the Sagehens 14-5 through the second quarter buzzer, and the Pioneers led 31-24 at halftime.

In the first 1:05 of the third quarter, Lewis & Clark committed three turnovers after Melissa Hooke made a 3-pointer on Pomona-Pitzer's opening possession. Brulee-Wills scored off the final giveaway by Lewis & Clark to bring the Sagehens within 31-28, but Lewis & Clark answered with nine straight points on three-point plays from Hogman, Kelly and Ochoco. The Pios eventually led by a game-high 16 points at the 3:01 mark of the third quarter.

Pomona-Pitzer held Lewis & Clark to 14 points the rest of the game, including just 11 points in the fourth quarter, as the Pios went 5 of 17 from the field in the game's final 10:30. Prior to that point, Lewis & Clark had made 20 of 41, or 49 percent.

The Sagehens shot 38 percent for the game, but only committed six turnovers to the Pios' 15 giveaways.

Both teams pulled down 37 rebounds. Leith, Kaitlin Mathewson and Kelley Koeppen each had seven for Lewis & Clark, while Brulee-Wills had 16 rebounds to lead Pomona-Pitzer in a double-double effort.

The Pios play the finale of the road trip at 2 p.m. on Friday at Vanguard before returning to Portland to resume Northwest Conference games against George Fox on Jan. 8.
