Pioneers lose in final non-conference home game

PORTLAND, Ore. -- With the game tied midway through the third quarter, Lewis & Clark was outscored 36-23 by visiting Warner Pacific in the final 15 minutes en route to a 73-60 defeat.

The Pioneers nearly shot 41 percent in the second half, but Warner Pacific hit over 47 percent of its tries to extend a 31-30 halftime lead to 48-43 at the end of the third quarter. Lewis & Clark did outshoot the Knights 26 to 9 percent from three-point range.

Miyah Leith finished with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting to lead the Pioneers, while Kaitlin Mathewson and Natalie Kelly scored 10 points apiece on a combined 7 of 22 shooting night. Kelley Koeppen was a perfect 4 of 4 for eight points and five rebounds, the same total Mathewson, Leith and Kelly pulled down.

Lindsay Loe led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 8 of 12 for Warner Pacific. She had six rebounds, second only to teammate Taylor Howlett's game-high seven boards. Kyeli Hendryx scored 17 points and Daesha Jackson added 12 points.

Lewis & Clark fell behind 10-7 before going on an 8-0 run on a lay-in by Leith and back-to-back threes by Kelly. Loe's free throws kept the Knights close in the first quarter, but Leith's 3-pointer with 1:00 left in the period gave the Pios a 20-14 advantage through one quarter.

Warner Pacific answered back by scoring 15 of the first 21 points in the second quarter to build the one-point lead at the end of the half.

Leith had 14 of her 19 points in the first half, hitting 5 of 7 shots before halftime. Along with Kelly, the two went 4 of 6 from three-point range, but the Pios hit only 17 percent in the second half.

Mathewson gave Lewis & Clark a 32-31 lead two minutes into the third quarter before Loe brought the Knights back up by one a minute later. There were eight lead changes in the game along with six ties, the first of the second half coming at 35-35 with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter.

The teams exchanged baskets for the most part until Howlett nailed a three with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter to break a 37-37 tie and start an 11-4 run that nearly ended the quarter. Mathewson made two free throws to bring the Pios within five points at the end of the period.

In the fourth quarter, Hendryx scored 11 points and Jackson added six to help the Knights outscore Lewis & Clark in the fourth quarter 25-17.

Bench points were close in the game, as Warner Pacific held a 14-8 edge. The Pios got six points from Lauren Wood, while Sara Hogman added two points. Three Knights players, Bailey Allen, Hannah Mocaby and Brett Larson, had four points to lead the Warner Pacific reserves.

Lewis & Clark heads to the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Pioneers will play host Colorado College at 2 p.m. on the first day before a 12 p.m. tip with Augsburg on Saturday.
