Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers returned home after a five-game road swing, but the familiar venue didn't produce friendly tilts in the Pios' direction, as Lewis & Clark lost to Linfield in straight sets, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22, at Pamplin Sports Center on Saturday night.
The Pioneers lost the match despite the score being tied in the 20s in all three sets.
After trailing 24-20, Lewis & Clark scored four straight points in the opening set to even it 24-24 before Linfield scored on an attack error by Julia Somers and a kill by Jamie Talbo to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Linfield led the majority of the way including a 22-18 advantage late. Lewis & Clark scored four straight points on a setting error by Talbo, kills by Maeleen Hopeau and Kortney Meyer and Mikayla Lopez's ace. Eryka Keoho landed a kill and Molly McTaggart scored an ace to put the Wildcats back up by two, but the Pios answered with a kill from Ali Carleton and an error by Courtney Uyeda. Linfield's Darian Stedman scored a kill and Somers committed a Lewis & Clark error to end the set, giving Linfield a two-set lead.
Lewis & Clark held a 20-17 lead in the third set, but Linfield scored four straight points to take a lead. Riley Stephens put down a kill to tie the set at 21-21 and the two teams traded points before Linfield scored on a Stedman kill and a Carleton error. Trailing 24-22, Lewis & Clark's Hopeau committed the Pios' 18th attack error of the night to seal the Linfield win.
Somers led all players with 35 total attack attempts, hitting .057 with 11 kills and nine errors. Along with Alexe Navarro's 15 digs, Somers was the only Lewis & Clark player with double-digit digs with 10. Stephens had six kills, while Hopeau and Carleton posted five apiece.
Taibo was Linfield's top hitter, landing 10 kills to finish with a .348 hitting percentage. She also had 17 assists and 11 digs. Uyeda had the top digs performance of the match with 18. McTaggart finished with nine kills on 29 attempts, while Tiara Huffaker landed eight kills.
The Pios hit .155 for the match compared to Linfield's .207.
Linfield stayed in fourth place in the Northwest Conference with the win, while the Pios are now tied with Puget Sound for fifth. Whitworth leads Willamette by one game for the NWC lead.
Lewis & Clark plays on Wednesday against Willamette on "Pink Out" night, where fans are invited to tell their story about being affected by breast cancer. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Pamplin Sports Center.
