Despite dominate third set, Pios can't beat Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Ali Carleton landed three aces and Maeleen Hopeau hammered four kills as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers volleyball team won the third set by 17 points, but Pacific took the Northwest Conference match 25-19, 25-18, 8-25, 25-16 on Saturday night at Stoller Center.

The loss was Lewis & Clark's fifth in the last six matches, moving the Pios to 5-5 in the Northwest Conference and fourth place in the standings.

In the opening set, Pacific went on a 6-0 run, including three kills by Hannah Herbert, to build a 13-7 lead. Lewis & Clark didn't get closer than five the rest of the set and the Boxers took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Lewis & Clark (8-9; 5-5 NWC) led 14-12 in the second set before Pacific won four straight points twice to go up 22-15, eventually winning by seven.

There were 16 combined aces in the match, including six by the Pioneers. Carleton had her three in the third set and Lewis & Clark went up 11-1. Julia Somers, Casey Myszkowski and Riley Stephens complimented an ace from Emily Drake to extend the lead to 17-4. Five Pacific errors and kills by Somers, Carleton and Hopeau moved the match to a fourth set.

The finale was even to the midway point, but Pacific scored 13 of the final 17 points to close out the match.

Somers led the Pios and the match with 13 kills, while Hopeau went for double-digits with 10. Marie Rewick led the Boxers with 10 kills as well.

Mikayla Lopez, who also had an ace and nine digs, finished tied with Pacific's Emily Farnham for the top assists total, 18.

Alexe Navarro finished with a match-high in digs for the eighth straight game, posting 24 against Pacific (8-10; 5-5). Somers and Carleton also had double-digit digs with 13 and 11, respectively. Rewick led Pacific with 14.

The Pios continue on the road next Friday playing at Pacific Lutheran. It will be the fifth straight road match for Lewis & Clark before they return home on Oct. 24 to host Linfield. The Pios play four of the final five games at home.
