Softball Sweeps Puget Sound; Rosario Hits First Collegiate Homerun

TACOMA, Wash- The Lewis & Clark softball team swept Puget Sound in make-up Northwest Conference games Wednesday in Tacoma, winning game one 7-4 and game two 7-5 in eight innings. Finishing the four game series against the Loggers, the Pioneers took all four for wins. The Pioneers move to 9-19 overall and 5-14 in Northwest Conference action, while the Loggers move to 2-24 and 1-19 in conference play. 

Game One:  

Haley Robinson led off the game knocking a double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tiana Rosario then hit a ball to the shortstop who couldn't handle it allowing her to reach and Robinson to score. The left fielder created an error on a Madison Hollenbeck hit scoring Rosario from second to put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the first inning. 

Lindsay Yearman led off the fourth with a single for the Pioneers and advancing to second on a Jenai Rojo single to right. Amanda Rabith was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Kalin Rooney who reached on a fielders' choice and scoring Yearman on a shortstop throwing error. 

The Loggers fought back in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs on on two hits. The Pioneers came right back and scored two in the top of the fifth. Tiana Rosario doubled down the left field line and scored on a Hannah Dal Pra single up the middle. Dal Pra advanced to second on a Hollenbeck single. Yearman then hit into a fielders' choice knocking Dal Pra out at third and leaving runners on second and first. An error by the shortstop scored Hollenbeck, advanced Yearman, and allowed Rojo to reach. 

The top of the seventh brought more runs for the Pioneers who scored two runs on four hits and an error. Dal Pra led off the inning with a double to left, and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Hollenbeck. A single hit to right field by Yearman scored Dal Pra, advanced to second on a throw, and then to third on a wild pitch. Rojo hit a grounder to short that scored Yearman for the Pioneers final run of the game tallying the total to seven. 

Not giving up, the Loggers attempted to come back scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh off three hits. 

Hollenbeck (7-10) takes the win for the Pioneers pitching all seven innings giving up four runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out two. Jaci Young takes the loss for the Loggers pitching seven innings giving up seven runs on twelve hits while striking out one. 

Game Two:

The Pioneers struck first again in game two scoring one run in the first inning. Robinson was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Dal Pra ground out.  

The Loggers tied it up in the bottom of the third when two batters took a walk, one was hit by a pitch and a third walk scored Bailee Larson. 

The top of the fifth brought more runs for the Pioneers when Caitlin Basilio and Kelsey Buck took back-to-back walks and both advanced on a Robinson sac bunt. Dal Pra coming up big again roped a double down the right field line scoring both Basilio and Buck to make it 3-1. 

Taylor Jones scored another run for the Loggers when she bunted for a single, stole second and scored on a Lisa Colombo single. 

The seventh inning produced more runs for both teams as the Pioneers added one more run. Basilio hit a double up the middle, while Buck tripled down the right field line collecting an RBI. 

The Loggers fought back in the bottom of the seventh scoring two more runs on one hit and an error to tie the game up and take it into extra innings. 

Rosario led off the eighth for the Pioneers and cranked her first collegiate homer to left field. Dal Pra followed suit and cranked a double to left center. Picking up some RBI's, Yearman smacked a homer to left center putting the Pioneers up 7-4. 

The Loggers scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth using two errors to their advantage but it wasn't enough and the Pioneers took the sweep.

Rooney (1-2) took the win for the Pioneers pitching eight innings allowing five runs on four hits, while walking five and striking out six. Megan Campbell takes the loss for the Loggers pitching seven innings giving up six runs on nine hits, while walking two and striking out one. Young pitched the eighth inning giving up one run on one hit and walking one. 

The Pioneers play their final make-up game Thursday April 3 at George Fox for a single game of Northwest Conference action beginning at 4:30 p.m.
