TACOMA, Wash- The Lewis & Clark baseball team played Puget Sound in a double-header Saturday losing game one 6-7 and game two 4-8. The Pioneers move to 9-21-1 overall with a 3-14 conference record, while the Loggers move to 9-17 overall and a 7-10 conference record.
Game One:
Alex Heimbrodt (2-3) takes the loss for the Pioneers on the mound pitching seven innings allowing seven runs on ten hits, while walking one and striking out three. Severiano Villarruel also saw time on the mound for the Pioneers. Jarrod Beiser (3-1) takes the win for the Loggers pitching five innings allowing five runs on ten hits, while striking out four. Kian Kurokawa gets the save for the Loggers while Steve Wager also saw time on the mound.
The Pioneers came out strong in the first inning scoring one run on two hits. Bradley Lezak led the charge with a single to right field, and advanced to second on a Tommy Massari single to left center. Hayden Higger then sacrifice bunted both runners over a base. A ground out hit by Corey Davis allowed Lezak to score and the Pioneers to take an early 1-0 lead.
Another run scored in the fourth for the Pioneers when Eric Hyun singled to third base, stole second base, and advanced to third on an Andrew Traver ground out. Jacob Burton then scored Hyun with a sacrifice bunt.
Not slowing down, the Pioneers scored three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. Lezak began the inning with a triple to right center and scored when Massari reached on an error by the left fielder and advanced to third. Massari then scored on a Higger single to center field. With a Davis single and a Matthew Cathcart single, the bases were loaded. Traver took advantage and hit a single to left scoring Higger and taking the Pioneer lead to five.
The Loggers started to claw their way back in the fifth when they scored four runs on four hits and used one Pioneer error to their advantage.
Scoring their last run in the sixth, Lezak once again began the inning hitting a double and advanced to third on a ground out. Davis singled to right scoring Lezak for the Pioneers final run of the game.
Scoring three runs on three hits and an error in the seventh gave the Loggers the go ahead run and the win 7-6 as the Pioneers couldn't score in the last two innings of play.
Lezak, Davis, and Hyun all finished with three hits, while Massari finished with two and Higger, Cathcart, and Traver each finished with one.
Game Two:
John Trupin (3-5) takes the loss on the mound for the Pioneers pitching six and one third innings allowing eight runs on ten hits, while walking five. Aaron Landecker and Stein Retzlaff also saw time on the mound for the Pioneers. Collin Maier (3-3) takes the win for the Loggers pitching six innings allowing one run on five hits, while walking two and striking out three. Kian Kurokawa gets another save for the Loggers while Jarrod Beiser also saw time on the mound.
The third inning saw some action from the Loggers as they lit up the scoreboard first scoring four runs on three hits and taking advantage of a few wild pitches.
The Pioneers got on the board in the sixth when Cathcart singled to left center, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Hyun single to right center field. The top of the seventh brought two runs for the Pioneers that started with Ben Beck reaching on a throwing error. Massari drew a walk, putting runners in scoring position for Higger who singled through the left side, scoring Beck. On a Davis single up the middle Massari scored giving the Pioneers their third run.
The Loggers came right back scoring four runs on three hits and three errors in the bottom of the seventh advancing their lead to five.
Managing to score one more run in the ninth when Higger singled to center, and advanced to third on a Davis single. With a Cathcart walk loading the bases, Hyun reached on a fielders' choice that scored Higger and the Pioneers only other run taking the loss 4-8.
Led by Higger who finished with three hits and an RBI for the Pioneers, while Davis and Hyun each had two, and Cathcart and Evan Gray finished with one hit each, respectively.
The Pioneers finish out the three game series with the Loggers Sunday April 13 at noon.
