BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore- The Lewis & Clark baseball team defeated the #19 George Fox Bruins 6-3 on Tuesday in game three of the Northwest Conference series. Sophomore pitcher John Trupin picked up the complete game win, while the Pioneer bats put together 11 hits.

With the win the Pioneers improve to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in NWC play. The Bruins fall to 12-2 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Inning one was quiet for both teams but George Fox struck first in the second inning that started with two back-to-back singles by Zac Rapacz and Clay Mott. Both advanced on passed balls and then scored off an error.

Lewis & Clark fought back in the same inning with the help of back-to-back singles as well from Matthew Cathcart and Tommy Massari. Jacob Burton laid down a sac bunt to push both runners forward, while Ben Beck stepped up to the plate and ripped a single up the middle to score Cathcart from third.

The Bruins didn't let up scoring two more runs in the third inning off four hits and one error to take the lead by two.

Nick Lockwood started the hit parade in the fourth with a double to center field. With a Cathcart walk, and a Massari single to center, the bases were loaded for Burton who singled bringing in the first run of the fourth.  Bradley Lezak then doubled to left bringing in two more runs.

The Pioneers weren't finished as they scored two more runs in the fifth off of two hits and an error. Andrew Traver was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was moved to third on a fielder's choice hit by Lockwood. Cathcart with his second hit of the day doubled to left knocking in Traver. Massari reached on an error pushing Cathcart to third, only to let Burton score him, as he hit a single to score the second run of the inning and take the lead 6-3. The rest of the game remained scoreless and the Pioneers walked away with a 6-3 win over the #19 ranked team in the country.

The win is Trupin's second of the season, earning him a 2-1 overall record on the mound for L&C. Tom Zarosinski picks up his first loss of the season for George Fox (3-1) after giving up six runs on 10 hits.

Lewis & Clark remains at home for its next contest, hosting the Whitman Missionaries on Monday, March 10 in a non-conference double-header beginning at 12 p.m.
