Women's Basketball Takes Down CalTech for Second Consecutive Victory

Box Score

PASADENA, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team leaves California with back-to-back wins, defeating CalTech 68-46 on Saturday afternoon one day after earning a victory over Occidental.

The Pioneers were paced by a game-high 20 points from senior Casey Zinn, while sophomore Ayisat Afolabi earned the teams only double-double, netting 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Zinn ended the game one rebound shy of a double-double of her own, pulling down nine boards. Freshman Lauren Wood also scored in double-figures for L&C, knocking down 10 points.

Stephanie Wong led the Beavers with 16 points, while Kate Lewis pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go with her 12 points.

The Pioneers owned most every aspect of the game, out rebounding the Beavers 58-33, earning 27 of their points on put backs. The Pios also made the most of their free-throw opportunities, finishing 80.0% from the charity stripe, which included a 2-for-2 performance from Afolabi and Kaitlin Mathewson, while Rachel Cox ended the night 4-of-6 from the line.

Both of Afolabi's free-throws earned the Pioneers a 4-2 advantage with 17:46 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers would never trail.

Lewis & Clark took a 14-2 lead with 15:20 on the clock on a Wood layup assisted by Sarah Anderson, who took the Pioneers down court after picking up the first of her two defensive boards. A pair of Cox free-throws earned the Pioneers a 16 point advantage with 10:59 to go until halftime. The Beavers would chip away at the deficit but would only get as close as 11 points heading into the intermission.

Zinn opened the second half the same way she opened the first, with an offensive rebound and quick layup.  Lewis & Clark would keep CalTech at a comfortable distance throughout the second half, eventually earning its largest lead in the final 28 seconds on a Cianna Ochoco jumper.

Lewis & Clark returns to the court on Sunday, Dec. 21 once again in California, participating in the UC-Santa Cruz Tournament.
