PORTLAND, Ore. - Senior Tayler Wang picked up her sixth double-double of the season on Saturday night, knocking down 24 points and collecting 12 rebounds in the Pioneers 68-51 win over the Willamette Bearcats in Northwest Conference action.
The win moves the Pioneers to 9-6 on the season and 4-2 in the NWC, where they are in full control of fourth place. The Bearcats slip to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in conference.
Wang was the only player to end the night with a double-double. The senior was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting all six of her attempts, while draining 9-of-14 from the floor. Wang pulled down most of her rebounds on the defensive side of the ball, leading all players with nine defensive boards.
Casey Zinn finished the night with 12 points for the Pioneers, hitting all four of her free-throws and both of her three-point attempts. Kathlene Howe led the team in assists with four, while Daron Dean and Ayisat Afolabi each earned two.
Katie Kalugin paced the Bearcats with a team-high 20 points, while teammate Savanna Steele knocked down nine.
Despite falling behind early, the Pioneers opened on a 6-2 run which was capped off on a Zinn layup at the 17:36 mark. Willamette came right back to take an 8-6 lead just three minutes later. Lewis & Clark then repaid the favor with a 10-0 run that included two baskets from Wang and senior Cassie Beucherie. The Pioneers would continue to blow past the Bearcats in the remainder of the half, taking a strong 30-18 advantage into the intermission.
Lewis & Clark kept its foot on the gas in the opening of the second half, quickly surging ahead to a 41-22 lead with 16:05 remaining. Willamette tried to pull back within striking range, but 59-44 is the closest that they would manage to get on a Arianna Musser three-pointer with 4:45 left to play.
Lewis & Clark hits the road next weekend to face #4 Whitman at 6 p.m. in Walla Walla.
