PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team held its own against the #8 ranked George Fox Bruins on Friday night in Northwest Conference action. Despite having four players score in double figures, the Pioneers were unable to overcome the Bruins falling 70-65.
The Pioneers fall to 6-6 on the season and 1-2 in NWC action, while the Bruins move to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in conference.
Katie Anderson scored 15 points to pace the Pioneers, while freshman Ayisat Afolabi scored 12 and Tayler Wang and Kaitlin Mathewson had 11 apiece. Wang and Afolabi led the Pioneers off the boards with five rebounds each. Wang also ended the game with a game-high four assists.
Megan Arnoldy scoring a game-high 18 points for the Bruins. Lauren Codling was the only other Bruin to score in double figures with 10, while Jordyn Peacock and Jami Roos scored nine each.
George Fox jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Lewis & Clark quickly rattled off six unanswered points to take a 6-4 advantage just two minutes into the contest. The Bruins once again took control of the lead, pushing ahead 18-11 with 13:34 to go.
Unrattled, the Pioneers tied the game at 22 all on a Afolabi layup at the 6:07 mark. Lewis & Clark would then take the lead on back-to-back Wang free-throws four minutes later. The lead would be short lived as the Bruins ended the half on an 8-3 run, taking a 37-34 lead into halftime.
The second half was just as drama filed with the opening seven minutes being a battle of wills. The Bruins settled down first to take a double-digit lead with 11:29 left in the game with several quick trips down the court.
Once the Pioneers settled into the half, they cut the Bruin lead to one point courtesy of a 10-0 run that was capped off with Afolabi free-throws at the 8:13 mark. George Fox held tightly to the lead throughout the remainder of the game but not before the Pioneers getting several looks late. Unfortunately the Pioneers were unable to hit any of their late shot attempts, sending the Bruins home with the 70-65 win.
Lewis & Clark returns to action tomorrow night (Jan. 11) at 6 p.m. when they take on the Linfield Wildcats.
