REDLANDS, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team used a fast start to take a big lead and not look back, hitting triple digits for the third time in four games this year as they defeated University of Redlands 101-70 on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The Pioneers improve to 4-0 on the season, with five more games before their Northwest Conference schedule commences. The Bulldogs fell to 1-3.
Lewis & Clark has made a habit of starting fast in games this season, and the Pioneers didn't disappoint. They jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first nine minutes of play, and would extend that lead to as much as 26 in the first half. Lewis & Clark shot 47.1 percent from the field in the first half while holding Redlands to 22.6 percent shooting and forcing 10 Bulldog turnovers.
The Pioneers kept pouring it on in the second half, never letting their lead dip below 20 points. The sizable Lewis & Clark lead allowed for every player on the team to get minutes, and almost every player scored in the blowout win.
In their previous wins, the Pioneers have largely relied on stellar three point shooting to build large leads, but Saturday nights' win over the Bulldogs showed a newfound versatility. Lewis & Clark shot only 10-26 from long range, but was able to find success in other areas. Strong defense also led to Redlands shooting only 34.8 percent on the night.
Six Pioneers, including four of five starters, reached double figure scoring in the victory. Serg Ovchinnikov led the way with 20 points on 6-9 shooting from three-point range. Quentin Sims added 14 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Randall Jackson finished with 13 points after leading the team in scoring in first half with 11. Kurt Parker added 12 points, while Justin Leathers and Connor Freeberg scored 11 apiece.
Ben Neves logged a valuable 23 minutes off the bench for Lewis & Clark, leading the team with seven assists. Leathers finished with a team-high nine rebounds, falling just one board short of a double-double.
The Pioneers continue their California road trip on Sunday, Nov. 24, when they take on Concordia College at 2 p.m.
