Softball Drops Both Makeup Games to Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark softball team dropped both of its makeup games against the Whitworth Pirates on Monday afternoon. The Pirates won game one 8-4 before taking game two 14-6 after five innings.

The Pioneers started out strong in the first inning of game one scoring three runs, the first from Jet'aime Mullins off of a double to left center from Caroline DiVincenzi. A single from moriah Lane earned her an RBI and brought home DiVicenzi. Caitlin Relyea rounded out the scoring after a single from Lauren Lovato up the middle.

The Pirates quickly responded in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own starting with a homerun from Sami Parr, the first batter of the inning. Jamie Brunner brought home the second run of the day with the homerun of her own to right center. Whitworth's final fun of the inning came from Whitney Byrom after the a sacrifice fly from Ross.

Unable to keep up with the Whitworth offense, the Pioneers fell six to three until the top of the seventh when Mullins scored a homerun to left center, her second of the year, ending the game at eight to four.

Game two found the Pioneers coming out strong earning three, scored by DeVincenzi, Relyea and Mullins. Whitworth came right back with a homerun from Sacha Clow bringing in Julia Johnson and Brunner and a ran Caylan Haehl after a double from right center.

Lewis & Clark took the lead in the top of the third with a homerun from Lane, her fifth, and a run from DiVincenzi. Not to be left behind Whitworth scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, taking the lead by one run.

Tying the game in the top of the fourth, Taylor Gatti scored on wild pitch, ending the scoring the Pioneers.

The Pirates scored five runs in four hits in the bottom of the fourth and then three runs and four hits in the fifth to take the game fourteen to six.

The Pioneers fall to 2-27 overall and 0-19 in the NWC. The Pirates improve to 17-15 on the season and 10-10 in conference play.

Lewis & Clark continues play Friday, April 6 at home against Puget Sound. Game one begins at noon.
