Game One
Game Two
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark softball team took on the Whitworth Pirates on Sunday evening in the first two games of the four game Northwest Conference series after rains forced the two sides to postpone action on Saturday.
In game one, the Pirates scored first, plating two runs in the second inning first on an RBI triple from the left fielder, followed by an RBI double from the catcher.
Whitworth helped the Pioneers cut their deficit in half in the third inning when a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Kelsey Buck to score from second. Buck reached base earlier in the inning on slap hit to the pitcher.
The Pioneers kept the Pirates off the board in the bottom half of the third, but could not keep them from plating two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and eventually three runs in the sixth.
The Pirates were the first to get on the board once again in the second game, plating two runs in the first inning of action.
Jet'aime Mullins pulled the game even at 2-2 in the top of the third with a bomb over the fence in left field that also brought in Caitlin Basilio.
Whitworth recaptured the lead in their half of the inning, before tacking on another run in the fourth.
Down 4-2, senior Caitlin Relyea hit her first home run of the season over the wall in center field, once again tying the contest. Caroline DeVincenzi also came in to score after reaching base after being walked.
The Pioneer lead was short lived with the Pirates pulling ahead by a run in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
Relyea picked up her third RBI of the game in the seventh and tied the contest for the third time with a single down the left line that brought Buck in to score.
In the bottom half of the seventh, tied 5-5, a Pioneer error put the Pirates lead-off batter on base. The error would prove costly as the next batter tripled to right center, allowing the winning run to score.
The two sides will play the final two games of the series on Monday, April 2 at 12 p.m.
