BOX SCORE
CLAREMONT, Calif.- The Lewis & Clark softball team headed to California for Spring Break, taking on Pomona-Pitzer in its first game of the trip, taking down the Sagehens 7-2. The win is the Pioneers first of the season.
The Pioneers were led by a 2-for-3 performance from senior Caroline DeVincenzi, who scored two runs while being walked once. Freshman Moriah Lane ended the day 1-for-2, walking twice, scoring a run and picking up two RBI's with a strong home run.
DeVincenzi plated the first run of the game in the first inning, after hitting a double down the left field line with two outs. The senior then made her way to third, and eventually home, on a Sagehen wild pitch.
With two outs in the third inning, DeVincenzi was walked with Lane on deck. Lane stepped up and hammered the ball over the fence in center field, instantly putting the Pioneers ahead 3-0.
Pomona earned a run back in the bottom half of the third inning on an RBI single from to left field from the short stop.
Once again with two outs, the Pioneer offense got going, this time with a walk to Amanda Rabith in the top of the fourth inning. With Rabith at first, Kelsey Buck singled to the short stop. Pinch hitting, Jet'aime Mullins knocked in Rabith with a single to right field to put L&C up 4-1.
Following the Mullins single, the Sagehens brought in a new pitcher to face Caitlin Basilio. It took little time for Basilio to figure out the new pitcher, hitting a double to center, scoring both Mullins and Buck. With Basilio on base, DeVincenzi singled to center, moving Basilio to third before stealing second. Senior Caitlin Relyea ended the scoring for the Pioneers with a single to left field that allowed Basilio to score.
The Sagehens scored their final run of the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, but that would be as close as the Pioneers would allow them to get.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. against Vanguard.
