PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark softball team opened the season on Sunday at the Northwest Cup hosted by Concordia, falling to the College of Idaho 10-7 before losing to the host team 7-2.
Game One: Lewis & Clark 7 College of Idaho 10
Scoring off an illegal pitch in the first inning the College of Idaho led the game with another run in the second until bottom of the third. Kelsey Buck and Jet'aime Mullins both earned runs for the Pioneers.
The Coyotes gained their momentum in the fourth earning five runs including one home run by Kristen Haugen.
Lewis & Clark answered back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs from Buck, Caitlin Basilio, Mariel McClenahan and Mullins.
College of Idaho and Lewis & Clark both earned one run in the sixth, bringing the score to 10-7.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning ending the game with a Coyote win.
Madison Hollenbeck and Hallie Knife both pitched for the Pioneers.
Game Two: Lewis & Clark 2 Concordia (Ore.) 7
Game two of the day started off the on the right foot for the Pioneers earning two runs in the first two innings from Basilio and Megan Andre. That would end the offensive from Lewis & Clark, as their competitors went on to score seven runs to earn the victory.
Tobey Varney scored on walk to earn the Cavaliers their first run of the afternoon. A double to left center by Jordyn Brown earned Varney her second run of the day. A single from Jennifer Lutton to left center earned her two RBI allowing Brown and Tara Baglai to score to two runs. Laura Luther rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a double to right field bringing Lutton and Mary Lugar home.
Natalie Rose and Hollenbeck pitched for the Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark begins conference play Saturday Feb. 25 when they take on Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash. at 12 pm & 2 pm.
