LOS ANGELES – The #6 Lewis & Clark women's basketball team concluded its California trip with a 62-53 win over the Occidental Tigers.
Despite trailing in the start of both halves, the Pioneers showed why they are a strong opponent, coming from behind to pick up their 10th win of the year. The Tigers fall to 4-3 on the season.
Senior Kristina Williams once again led the way for the Pioneers, dropping 15 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Tayler Wang earned her second consecutive double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 boards. Sara Villanueva scored 14 points in the win for Lewis & Clark.
Elizabeth Messick was the Tigers leading scorer with 12 points and pulling down a game-high 15 boards.
Occidental opened on a 14-4 run and continued to hold the lead until the 4:17 minute mark. A Villanueva three-pointer earned the Pios the lead which they would take into halftime.
The Tigers recaptured the lead three minutes into the second half on back-to-back Michelle Naito-Lo free-throws. Oxy remained in control of the game until 6:21 left in the second period.
Williams made it a 47-45 game in favor of Occidental with 6:40 to go after draining her first of two free-throws. After missing her second one, teammate Jessica Rodriguez collected the rebound and dished it out to Katie Anderson who drained a three-pointer. The basket earned the Pioneers a one point, 48-47, advantage.
The Pioneers never looked back, steadily increasing their lead throughout the remaining six minutes of the game.
The Pioneers return to action on Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. when they take on Northwest Conference rival George Fox.
