PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark volleyball team opened the 2011 campaign with the Northwest Conference Invitational, hosting six teams from around the west region.
The Pioneers opened the tournament with a contest against Edgewood College, a Division III school from Madison, Wis. The two teams battled back and forth with the Eagles winning the first set and the Pios tying things up in the second. Edgewood would go on to earn a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers.
The second game of the day saw the Pioneers take on Embry-Riddle from Arizona. The Pioneers had control of the game from start to finish, winning the contest in three straight sets. Senior Margaret Dowling finished the match with seven kills, while Pioneer newcomer Brigitte Russo had six. Russo also had a solid performance at the net, earning three blocks.
The final game of the day for Lewis & Clark was against Northwest Conference foe George Fox. The Bruins came out of the gate strong, taking the first two sets from the Pioneers. The Pios dug deep in the third set and came from behind to win 25-20. The fourth set proved to be a high intensity dual with both sides trading points throughout the contest. After tying things at 21-21, the Bruins surged to take the set and the match.
Against the Bruins, Russo led the Pios with nine kills and two service aces. Stephanie Kerr led the way for George Fox with 12 kills, while Erin Campbell knocked down 10.
The NWC Invitational continues on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 9:30 a.m. The first contest features Mayville State against Embry-Riddle and George Fox against Edgewood. The Pioneers take the court at 1:30 p.m. against Mayville State.
