PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark softball team earned a 14-11 victory over George Fox in game two of its Northwest Conference double-header on Saturday. The Bruins earned a 3-2 win in the first game.
The Pioneers are now 8-29 on the season and 2-24 in conference action. The Bruins are now 10-28 overall and 4-22 in the NWC.
George Fox scored twice in the second inning on a two-run homerun by Kayla Ward. The Bruins tacked on another run in the third on an RBI double from Bethany Chriss.
The Pioneers pulled within a run in the sixth. Caroline DeVincenzi came around to score the first run on a fielder's choice from Natalie Rose. An error by the Bruins helped Caitlin Relyea come in to score the second run of the inning.
Lewis & Clark tried to plate a run in the seventh, but were unable to find a way to score.
Game two was more of an offensive struggle with both teams scoring in double-digits. George Fox scored first, posting four runs in the first inning.
The Pioneers responded in the top of the second. The scoring began with an RBI single from Sarah Breninger. Jamie Moon followed that with an RBI single of her own. Four runs came in moments later on a huge grand slam by DeVincenzi.
The Bruins recaptured the lead in the home half of the third, scoring three runs on six hits. Hilary Broadus picked up two RBI's on her single to left field. While another Bruin run came across due to a Pioneer error.
George Fox went ahead 8-6 in the fourth on a solo homerun from Chriss.
Not be out done, the Pioneers battled back into the contest with a seven run fifth inning. Things began with back-to-back RBI singles, one by Relyea and another by Jet'aime Mullins. Relyea and Mullins would come around to score moments later courtesy of miscues by the Bruins in the field. Another Bruins error would allow Molly Donahue to score. Freshman Caitlin Basilio picked up an RBI for her single to right field that brought in Rose. The scoring ended with a DeVincenzi single that sent Megan Andre home.
Ahead 13-8, the Pioneers tallied another run in the sixth inning with Andre earning an RBI. Andre sent the ball into right field that allowed Mari McClenahan to score after coming in to pinch run for Donahue.
The Bruins tried to pull themselves back into the contest, plating three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, but it would not be enough.
The two sides conclude the season on Sunday, April 16 at 12 p.m. with another NWC double-header. The Pioneers will celebrate "Senior Day" prior to the start of the contest.
