Rose Pitches Complete Game as Softball Earns First Conference Win of 2011

Game One

Game Two

PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore pitcher Natalie Rose earned her third complete game victory on Saturday afternoon, guiding the Lewis & Clark softball team over Pacific in game one of a Northwest Conference double-header. The Pioneers earned a 4-2 victory in game one, before falling to the Boxers 10-1 in game two.

The win is the Pioneers first of the Northwest Conference season as they move to 7-16 on the season and 1-11 in conference. The Boxers are now 17-8 overall and 8-6 in NWC action.

The Pioneers struck first in the first game, scoring a single run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Rose. With two outs, freshman Sarah Breninger patiently earned a walk. With Breninger on first, Rose found a gap in right field, sending Breninger home.

Brooke Toy equalized for the Boxers in the top of the third inning, leading off with a base on a Pioneer error. She eventually came around to score on a passed ball moments later. Ashley Billingsley handed the Boxers their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning, with a lead-off homerun.

A huge three run sixth inning earned the Pioneers the lead and eventually the victory. Freshman Taylor Gatti led off the inning with a single to left field. Caitlin Basilio and earned her way on base with a single to right, followed by a walk to Caroline DeVincenzi. With the bases loaded, junior Caitlin Relyea doubled to left field, brining both Gatti and Basilio home. The Boxers managed to get DeVincenzi out at the plate as she attempted to score, but not before Relyea made her way to third. Relyea came around to score moments later on a Michaela Satter single through the left side.

Rose pitched seven innings, striking out four of the 31 batters she faced, allowing just two runs on six hits. Rylee Parke picked up the loss for the Boxers, pitching 5.2 innings, striking out six.

Game two was all Boxers, as they scored 10 runs on 13 hits.

The Boxers scored their first run in the first inning on an RBI single by Chelsey Chamberlain, scoring Stephanie Vanoudenhaeg who led off with a single. A solo homerun by Lauren Tuey in the second put Pacific ahead 2-0.

Four hits in the third inning resulted in three more runs for the Boxers, with Chamberlain starting things off with a two-run homerun. Billingsley was the third Boxer to cross home to put Pacific ahead 5-0.

Chamberlain picked up another RBI in the fourth inning, hitting a double to right center that brought in Vanoudenhaeg from second. Chamberlain would come around to score on a Tuey single. A Jenna Stevens single to center would bring another Pacific runner in to score, followed by a two RBI single from Madison Collura.

Down 10-0, Relyea scored the Pioneers lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homerun to left field.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, March 27 at noon as they travel to take on the Linfield Wildcats.
