Softball Splits Day Two of Tucson Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Lewis & Clark softball team earned an exciting 6-5 victory over Carleton on day two of the spring break tournament in Tucson on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier in the day the Pioneers fell to Otterbein 11-3.

Against Otterbein, the Pioneers scored three runs on seven hits, while committing one error. Lewis & Clark got on the board first, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Otterbein responded in its half of the inning with two runs to make it a 3-2 game. The Cardinals would go on to score nine more runs throughout the remainder of the contest to earn the 11-3 win.

Michaela Satter led the way for the Pioneers with a 2-for-3 performance, including a two RBI double. Jet'aime Mullins finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate.

In their final game of the day, the Pioneers earned a hard fought victory over Carleton with Natalie Rose once again getting a complete game win.

The two sides matched each other through the first two innings with one run scored in the first inning and none in the second. The Pioneers pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third, but Carleton managed to equalize in the top of the next inning.

Carleton briefly pulled ahead 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning with two runs. The Pios countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to once again pull the game even. Each team plated another run in the sixth inning.

Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Rose helped her own cause with an RBI single to left center. With two outs and a full count, Rose was able to get the better of the Carleton pitcher, scoring Satter from third base to win the game for the Pios.   

Freshmen Taylor Gatti and Sarah Breninger were both 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI for the Pioneers. Rose was also 2-for-4 in the game with the game winning RBI. Mullins hit her second homerun of the tournament and fifth of the season against Carleton for her only hit of the game. Caroline DeVincenzi and Caitlin Relyea both picked up an RBI.

The Pioneers conclude their time in Tucson on Wednesday morning when they take on Hastings at 8 a.m.
