PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark softball team could not find a way to overcome the Whitworth Pirates on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Pirates 9-0 (six innings) and 8-3 in a Northwest Conference double-header.
The Pioneers fall to 2-12 on the season, while still searching for their first conference victory (0-8 NWC). The Pirates improve to 8-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
The Pirates quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three complete innings in the first game. Whitworth managed to plate two runs on three hits in the first inning, before following up with a single run in the second. A two-run homerun from Julia Johnson in the third inning put the Pirates up by five.
A four run sixth inning from Whitworth ended the scoring. Sami Parr doubled down the leftfield line to score two Pirates with just one out. A single from shortstop Heather Hesselgesser scored Parr and Makenzi Hope.
Emily Anderson picked up the win for the Pirates, while Natalie Rose suffered the loss for Lewis & Clark.
Johnson finished the first game 2-for-3 from the plate, scoring one run and collecting two RBI. Jill Pecka was also 2-for-3 from the plate and scored twice for Whitworth. Despite not scoring a run, the Pioneers received a solid performance from junior Caitlin Relyea who finished 2-for-3. Caroline DeVincnezi and Jamie Moon were each 1-for-3.
Game two began with Whitworth once again cruising to a solid lead. With two outs and a runner on third, the Pirates put together a rally that plated four runs in the top of the second inning. Left fielder Kelsey Ayers started the scoring with an RBI double that brought in Jamie Brunner from third. Ayers would come around to score with the next Pirate at bat, as pitcher Taylor Gilbert hit a triple to right field. Natalie Evers knocked in Gilbert before coming around to score on a Parr double.
The Pirates went up 6-0 in the third inning, with one of the runs coming on a solo homerun by Caty Lieseke. The Pioneers earned a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single from freshman Caitlin Basilio.
Whitworth rounded out its scoring in the top of the sixth with a two RBI double to center from Ashley Grieg. The Pioneers tried to come from behind to take the game in the seventh inning, with DeVincenzi and Jet'aime Mullins both hitting solo homeruns. Despite their efforts the Pirates earned the 8-3 victory.
Gilbert picked up the win, while Paige McFeeley was the losing pitcher. DeVincenzi and Mullins each ended the game 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring one run and collecting an RBI.
Parr was 3-for-3 for the Pirates, while Evers was 2-for-2.
The two sides will meet again on Sunday, March 13 for two more games. First pitch is set for noon.
