PORTLAND, Ore. – On Saturday, the Lewis
& Clark (1-1) football team put on a show offensively
against Pomona-Pitzer College (0-2) winning 63-38. The Pioneers
broke the single game team rushing record, running for 549 yards,
while tying for the third most points ever scored in a single game.
Quarterback Keith Welch led the
way with five rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns on the
day.
Pomona came out strong offensively scoring on a 39 yard run by
Luke Sweeney within the first three minutes of the game. The
Pioneers answered back, scoring on a two yard run by Welch three
minutes later. After a great fourth down stand by the defense,
Welch connected with Harrison Keller
for a 19 yard touchdown pass in a third and long situation. The
Sagehens continued to score however, with a touchdown run by
Quarterback Jacob Caron and a field goal by Brian Hentschel putting
Pomona up by three with 8:55 left in the first half. Pomona would
not score for another 25 minutes as the Lewis & Clark defense
held strong. Meanwhile, Runningback Joevonte Mayes
and Welch led the rushing attack, moving the ball down the field on
big plays. Within the next eight minutes Welch ran for another two
touchdowns (29 yd, 37yd) putting the Pioneers up 28-17 at the
half.
After the half, the Pios scored quickly on a great 72 yard run
by Welch who showed a few shifty moves on his way to the
endzone. Lewis & Clark stayed strong defensively
through the third quarter and the Pioneer offense struck again
and again. An 18 yard pass by Welch to Keller, his second receiving
TD on the day and a 19 yard rush by Mayes capped a third quarter
where the Pios outscores the Sagehens 21-0. With the Pioneers
up 49-17 at the start of the fourth quarter the Sagehens did all
they could to mount a comeback. Three TD passes by Caron in the
final quarter helped their cause but they couldn't stop the Pioneer
rushing game as Welch and Andrew Frisina
put the nail in the coffin with another two rushing
Touchdowns for the Pioneers. The final score of 63-38 is tied
for the third highest point total for Lewis & Clark in school
history, narrowly missing the all-time game high of 67, set in 1962
against Whitman College.
