GAME ONE
GAME TWO
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Lewis &
Clark softball team dropped two games to the Whitworth Pirates on
Saturday afternoon at Marks Field in Spokane, Wash. in a
Northwest Conference double-header. The Pirates earned a
convincing 10-2 win in the first game, before barely
slipping past the Pioneers in the second game, winning 7-6.
The Pioneers slip to 3-24 on the season and 0-16 in NWC play.
The Pirates are now 13-12 overall and 7-10 in conference action.
In game one, Caitlin Relyea put the Pioneers on the board first
when she scored a Whitworth throwing error. Relyea reached base on
a double to right field, before moving to third on a Gabby Castro
bunt. With Castro attempting to steal second, the Pirate catcher
fired the ball into center field, allowing Relyea to come home.
Whitworth earned the run back in the bottom of the third inning,
with Natalie Evers coming in to score on a Jessica Mangis single.
Evers came in the game to pinch run for Caty Lieseke who led off
the inning with a single to second.
Following their run in the bottom of the third, the Pirates
seemed to find their offensive rhythm, tallying three runs in the
fourth inning. The Pioneers scored another run in the top of the
fifth inning, but the defense could not hold off the Pirates, who
scored five runs in the fifth inning to end the game.
In the second game, the Pirates opened with a 5-0 lead before
the Pioneers rallied from behind to take a 6-5 advantage in the top
of the fifth inning.
Relyea and freshman Megan Andre both hit singles in the top of
the fourth inning, to pull the Pioneers within 5-2. The Pioneers
kept the momentum going in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to
capture the lead for the first time in the game. Senior catcher
Jessica Mullins picked up two RBI's with a single up the middle
that brought Caroline DeVincenzi and Michaela Satter in to score.
Relyea capped off the scoring with her first home run of the
season. Relyea nailed the ball over the fence in center field to
score herself and Jessica Mullins.
The Pirates kept fighting and managed to tie the game in the
bottom of the fifth on a couple of Pioneer miscues. With the bases
loaded in the seventh the Pirates scored the game winning run on a
errant pitch.
Relyea had a huge day for the Pioneers, going 3-for-5 from the
plate, while collecting her first home run of the season.
The two teams will play again on Sunday for the final two games
of the four-game Northwest Conference series.
