Softball Falls To Pacific In NWC Opener

Game One

Game Two

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark softball team dropped both games of its Northwest Conference season opening doubleheader against the Pacific Boxers on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Sports Complex. The Boxers earned a 10-2 victory in game one, before capturing a 16-7 win in game two.

The Pioneers fall to 0-9 on the season and 0-2 in the NWC. The Boxers improve to .500 on the season, taking their record to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

In game one, the Pios scored both of their runs in the fourth inning of action with sophomore Caitlin Relyea hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, that brought in both Jaimie Moon and Michaela Satter. The runs came a little late, as the Boxers already held a eight run advantage, heading into the Pios half of the inning.

The Boxers sealed the game in their favor in the top of the fifth inning, using two leadoff walks to put runners in scoring position. A single to right center by Carrie Maerz brought those two runners in to score, putting the Boxers up 10-2. The Pio offense was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning, handing Pacific the conference opening victory.

Game two began with the Boxers posting three runs in the first inning, with Chelsey Chamberlain crushing a three-run home run over the left field fence. The Pioneers answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, moving the runners around the base by playing small ball and taking advantage of Boxer mistakes. Moon would come around to score the first run on a double to center by Caroline DeVincenzi. DeVincenzi became the teams second run after Satter hit one through the middle of the field.

The Boxers rebounded with six runs over the next three innings, take a 9-2 lead into the fifth inning. Pacific piled on three runs in the top of the fifth on another monster home run. This time Jessie Garcia smacked the ball out of the park, bringing two of her teammates in to score, along with herself, giving the Boxers a 12-2 lead.

Digging deep and finding the holes in the Pacific defense, picking up five runs on three hits and one Boxer error in the bottom of the fifth. DeVincenzi walked in as the first run of the inning, after the catcher interfered on Satter's at bat with the bases loaded. Relyea and Jet'aime Mullins picked up RBI singles, before a double down the right field line by Moon scored two more Pio runners.

Pacific bounced back with a huge sixth inning, putting the game away with four unanswered runs, taking the 16-7 victory.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, March 7 at 12 p.m. as they head to McMinnville to take on the Linfield Wildcats.
