PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
women's basketball team dominated the glass on Tuesday night
as they took down the Willamette Bearcats, 70-58, in a Northwest
Conference match-up at the Pamplin Sports Complex. The Pioneers
pulled down a season high 60 rebounds, led by 10 from senior
Talerra Rich and sophomore Megan Spence.
With the win, the Pioneers improve to 15-7 on the season and 9-4 in
conference play, keeping their hopes of a post-season birth alive.
The Bearcats slip to 3-19 overall and 1-12 in NWC action.
In the first half the Pioneers opened on a 10-2 run, spreading the
wealth, with five different players contributing to the 10 points.
The Bearcats were able to pull within four points on the Pios,
12-8, with 10:04 remaining in the half after Keilyn Fujioka drained
a jumper. The Pioneers would respond with an uncontested 11-0 that
spanned three minutes, giving the Pios a 23-8 lead with a little
over five minutes remaining in the half. The Pios would continue to
keep the Bearcats at a double-digit lead throughout the remainder
of the half, heading into the locker room with a 14 point, 31-15,
advantage.
Freshman Kristina Williams extended the Pios lead to 17 points with
17:39 remaining in the contest, after being fouled as she made a
jumper, allowing her to complete the three-point play. The closest
the Bearcats would come to catching the Pios was at the 8:48 mark,
when Kaileigh Westermann closed the gap to 12 points, 48-36, on a
good jumper. The Pios hardly noticed the basket, running up their
largest lead of the game courtesy of a Spence jumper with a little
over two minutes to go. The Spence jumper handed the Pios a 25
point, 68-45, advantage with the dish coming from Sara Villanueva.
The Bearcats were able to earn some points back in the closing
minutes of the half after the Pioneers emptied their bench,
allowing Willamette to pull within 12 points to end the game with
the final score of 70-58.
The Pioneers were led by a game-high 17 points from sophomore Neva
Hauser, who shot 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and 2-of-3 from
behind the arc. Spence ended her night with her third double-double
of the season, adding 12 points to her 10 rebounds. Junior
Christina Herring also had a solid night, finishing one rebound shy
of a double-double of her own, pulling down nine rebounds and
posting 11 points.
The Bearcats picked up a team-high 10 points from Alex Zennan,
while Westermann finished with nine points and nine boards.
The Pios return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. for
their final home game of the season. The team will honor seniors
Rich and Paige Dinnie prior to tip-off.
