Game 1 vs.
Oregon Tech
Game 2 vs. NW
Christian
CLACKAMAS, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
softball team continues to use its non-conference games as a
tune-up for the Northwest Conference, playing two games as part of
the Concordia Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20. The Pioneers took on
Oregon Institute of Technology in their first game of the
tournament, falling 5-1, before falling to Northwest Christian,
4-1.
Game one was a highly competitive game, despite the final result,
with OIT holding a slim 2-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Oregon Tech put up two runs in the top of the fifth inning, scoring
on three hits, including a lead-off home run.
The Pioneers answered back with a run of their own in the bottom
half of the inning, with sophomore first baseman Danielle Blechert
leading things off with a hard hit double down the left field line.
Jet'aime Mullins came in to pinch run for Blechert, adding a
lot of speed to the bases for the Pios. A shot back to the pitcher
by Sara Standish allowed Jet'aime Mullins to advance to
third, setting the Pios up for a great scoring opportunity. A
single to right field from Gabby Castro sent Jet'aime Mullins
home, cutting the OIT lead to one.
A home run and a costly error by the Pios, allowed Oregon Tech to
put up three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, making the
score 5-1. The Pios were unable to chip away at the lead in their
final opportunity, allowing OIT to collect the victory.
Game two saw the Pios jump ahead of the Beacons in the first
inning, which is the first time this season that the Pioneers have
held a lead. The Pios took full advantage of two Beacon errors in
the first inning, while playing small ball. Senior Jaimie Moon
scored the Pios run after reaching base on a single to the
shortstop.
The Pioneers carried their 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth
before NW Christian was able to respond. The Beacons picked up two
runs from a two-run home run and then were able to squeeze two more
across later, earning a 4-1 advantage. The lead would stick,
sending the Beacons home victorious.
The Pioneers return to the Concordia Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 21
at 1 p.m. when they take on the host team.
