NEWBERG, Ore. – It was a tough night for
the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team who fell to the
George Fox Bruins, 63-39, on Friday night in Northwest Conference
action at Wheeler Sports Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to
16-8 on the season and 10-7 in NWC action, while the Bruins improve
to 22-2 overall and a perfect 15-0 in conference.
In the first half, the Bruins got on the board first, pulling ahead
6-2 with 18:01 on the clock. Freshman Kristina Williams pulled the
Pios within two points, 6-4, at 16:12 with a layup in the paint,
assisted by Christina Herring. The Bruins managed to build their
lead throughout the half, pulling ahead by as many as 17. The Pios
continued to battle, cutting the Bruin advantage to 11 points on a
Herring layup, sending both teams into the locker room with the
score at 31-20.
The Pioneers pulled within seven points in the second half, with a
layup from senior Talerra Rich with 13:51 to play. The Bruins
settled down and took advantage of the home crowd, cruising to the
63-39 victory.
Spence led the way for the Pios offensively, earning 13 points,
shooting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Spence also ended the
night with a team-high eight rebounds. Rich scored 10 points, while
Williams knocked down seven points.
The Bruins were led by 19 points from Keisha Gordon, while B.B.
Gardner had 11 points and Lindsay Keener had 10. Hannah Munger
collected 11 rebounds for the Bruins.
The Bruins have secured the number one spot in the NWC playoffs,
while the Pioneers are in the playoffs, but their position has yet
to be determined. The Pioneers will either hit the road to take on
the Bruins once more on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m . or they will
travel to Tacoma, Wash. to face the Puget Sound Loggers.
