SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth Pirates got the
better of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Saturday night in a
Northwest Conference volleyball contest, earning a 3-0 (25-20,
25-23, 25-13) sweep.
The Pirates improve to 10-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference.
The Pioneers slip to 7-11 overall and 3-5 in NWC action.
Junior Margaret Dowling led the Pioneers offensively with 10
kills, while Katherine Fiedler contributed four. Alicia
Callejo-Black, Jenn Dowdy and Erika James each ended the night with
three kills. Leia Matsunaga finished with 15 assists while Kelsie
Dorpat picked up 10. Senior Molly Donahue led the team with 12
digs. Fiedler was a force at the net, finishing her night with a
match-high five blocks.
Amanda Grumbach ended with a match-high 13 kills for the
Pirates. Bree Riddle led all players with 38
assists.
The Pioneers picked up an early 4-0 lead in the first set,
before the Pirates mounted a comeback that saw them take control
for good at 10-9 on a Riddle kill. The Pios kept fighting to get
back into the set but were unable to overcome the Pirate
offense.
Rocha Ka'ipo put Whitworth on top in the beginning of the
second set, setting the tempo for the Pirates. Lewis & Clark
would tie the set at 2-2 but that would be as close as they would
come to the Pirates. Whitworth would cruise to a 25-20 win.
The third set was all Pirates with them posting an early 10-4
lead. Whitworth continued to pressure, eventually earning the
victory.
The Pioneers return to the court on Oct. 15 when they take on
the George Fox Bruins in Newberg, Ore.
