PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by 15 points from
freshman Kristina Williams, the Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team took down Northwest Conference foe Linfield, 73-65,
on Friday night at the Pamplin Sports Complex.
Williams was one of five Pioneers in double figures, helping guide
the Pios to a 9-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 conference
standing. The Wildcats fall to 2-10 on the year and 0-3 in NWC
action.
The Pioneers opened the contest with a dominate 12 points lead
with 11:49 on the clock, after Neva Hauser drained a three-pointer
to make the score 19-7 Pioneers. The Wildcats were able to claw
their way back into the contest, turning things around on a 13-1
run over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to one. Linfield
would close out the first half with a 32-29 advantage on a jumper
from Lindsey Gummersall with 15 seconds remaining.
In the second half, the two sides exchanged baskets over the first
ten minutes of action, with the Pioneers grabbing control of the
scoreboard at the 10:37 mark on a Hauser jumper. The Pioneers went
on a 14-5 run, capped off by a Margaret Dowling free throw with
4:25 remaining. The Pios capped off the game, sinking
seven-of-eight free throws over the final minutes.
Williams ended with 15 points and four rebounds, while Megan
Spence chipped in 13 points. Margaret Dowling ended her night with
a double-double, knocking down 12 points and grabbing 13 boards.
Hauser finished with 12 points, while Christina Herring had 11.
Gummersall paced the Wildcats with a game-high 17 points.
The Pioneers return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they
travel to Pacific Lutheran to face the Lutes in a NWC contest at 6
p.m.
