NEWBERG, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
volleyball team opened Northwest Conference action on Wednesday
night with a 3-2 road win over George Fox. The Pioneers improve to
5-4 on the season (1-0 NWC), while the Bruins fall to 5-2 (0-1
NWC). Junior Katherine Fiedler had a game-high 19 kills, while
freshman Leia Matsunaga ended the night with 48 assists.
"We are still trying to figure out who we are, but once we do we're
going to be a force to be reckoned with," said Head Coach Lori
Jepsen. "But it is awesome to open conference with a win,
especially on the road."
The Pioneers extended their win streak to 5 games, after defeating
the Bruins in five sets by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 10-25, 25-19,
and 15-10.
The Pios rolled in the first set, 25-18. In the second, it was
George Fox's time to shine as the Bruins ended with a .364
hitting percentage. Things fell apart for the Pioneers in the third
set as they fell 25-10. In the fourth the Pioneers fought back and
ended up winning the set 25-19 with 16 total kills. At the start of
the fifth, Lewis & Clark scored the first two points to take
the early lead before the Bruins tied things 4-4. The two teams
traded points for the next couple of plays, before the Pioneers
settled down to jump to a 14-9 lead. The Bruins picked up the next
point in their comeback attempt, but were unable to hold off the
Pioneers with Margaret Dowling ending the set on a successful kill
for the 15-10 victory.
Fiedler ended the game with a .500 attacking percentage for the
Pioneers, while also providing two block assists. Freshman Jennifer
Dowdy ended the match with 11 kills, while Dowling added 10. Junior
Lou Ohki was tied for a game-high 16 digs, followed by Dowling who
added 12.
The Pioneers hit the road for their next contest, taking on NWC
conference member Puget Sound on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
