GAME TWO
PORTLAND, Ore. – It was a great day for
softball at the Houston Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon, with
Lewis & Clark putting in two spectacular games against the #6
ranked Division III program in the country in Linfield. The
Wildcats defeated the Pioneers 8-1 in game one, before having to
claw their way to a 2-0 win in the second game.
Linfield took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one, earning
four hits off the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark managed to earn one
of those runs back in the bottom of the next inning, with Michaela
Satter picking up the RBI. Jessica Mullins was the runner who came
around to score, after leading off the inning with a walk. Mullins
moved into scoring position with a sacrifice by Sheree Miura,
before advancing to third on a single from Laura Parker.
Satter's ground out allowed Mullins to complete her trip
around the bases and put the Pios on the board.
The Wildcats blew the game out of the water in the third inning,
scoring five runs on six hits and two Pio errors. The Pioneers
tried their hardest to earn the runs back but were stifled by two
strong pitching performances by Claire Velaski and Brittany Woods.
The Wildcats managed to put one more run on the board in the fifth
inning to complete their 8-1 victory.
Paige McFeeley and Samantha Van Noy of the Wildcats had an all out
pitching war in game two, with the two sides going through five
complete innings before anyone managed to plate a run.
Linfield came close to getting a run on the board in the third
inning, with Candace Fujino making her way to third. Despite the
perfect opportunity to earn the early advantage, the Wildcats were
unable to send Fujino home.
The Wildcats were finally able to break threw in the top of the
sixth, scoring two runs on two hits. The Pioneers came close to
earning both runs back in the bottom of the inning, loading the
bases with two outs.
In the final inning of the game, the Pio's made a final surge
putting two runners on base but it would not be enough to earn the
win.
The Pioneers return to the diamond on Friday, April 10 hosting
Whitworth at 12 p.m. at the Houston Sports Complex.
