GAME TWO
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Whitworth Pirates
completed the four game sweep of the Lewis & Clark softball
team on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Sports Complex. The
Pirates defeated the Pioneers 15-2 after five innings in the first
game of the day, before pulling out a 9-4 victory in game two.
Caitlin Relyea picked up two RBI's for the Pioneers in the
first game, scoring the teams first run of the game with a solo
shot over the left field fence in the second inning. Relyea picked
up her second RBI in the bottom of the fourth, with a sacrifice fly
to right field that allowed senior Laura Parker to come home.
Despite both of Relyea's contributions, it would not be
enough to cut the Pirates 15 run advantage. The Pirates accumulated
all of their runs in just two strong offensive innings, posting
seven runs in the top of the second, before putting up eight runs
in the fourth.
The Pirates got on the board first in game two, once again plating
their first runs in the second inning of action. Rachel Anderson
gave her team a 2-0 advantage after doubling to center and bringing
in Carrie Gibson. Anderson would come around to score herself on
the same play after a costly error by the Pioneers.
Danielle Blechert pulled the Pioneers within one in the bottom of
the inning with a walk off home run to right field. Lewis &
Clark earned a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning courtesy
of another home run. This time the home run came from Jessica
Mullins with two runners on base. Both Jamie Moon and Caroline
DeVincenzi came around to score after reaching base on back-to-back
singles.
The Pioneer lead would be short lived with the Pirates plating six
runs on six hits in the top of the fourth inning. Whitworth scored
one more run in the top of the seventh inning to seal the 9-4
victory.
The Pios return to the field on Thursday, April 16 at 2:30 at the
Houston Sports Complex as they play host to George Fox.
