GAME TWO
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
softball team dropped two close contests to the Whitworth Pirates
on Friday, April 10 at the Houston Sports Complex, The Pirates
earned an 8-4 win in game one before picking up a 6-3 victory in
game two.
The Pioneers were led by Jessica Mullins who hit a home run in both
of the Pios contests, ending the day 3-3, which included two walks
in each game.
The Pirates jumped ahead in the first inning, scoring four runs on
two hits and two Pio errors. Sami Parr and Lacey Kerr came around
to score for Whitworth, after Parr led off the game with a hard
base hit to the L&C shortstop.
Lewis & Clark pulled within one run in the bottom of the
inning, cutting the Pirate advantage to 4-3. The Pios runs came on
Mullins first home run of the day, with the catcher nailing a shot
over the fence in center field. First baseman Danielle Blechert
also came around to score on the home run after reaching base on a
double down the left field line. Blechert's double brought in
Jamie Moon prior to the Mullins home run.
Whitworth went on to score two more in the top of the third inning,
while the Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the next inning.
Caroline DeVincenzi scored the teams lone run of the evening,
scoring on a wild pitch. DeVincenzi had reached base on a single to
right field and advanced to second after Blechert was hit by a
pitch.
The Pirates sealed the deal in the top of the fifth inning of
action, increasing their lead to 8-4 on just one hit. Mandee
Edwards came around to score for the Pirates, previously reaching
base on a single to center.
Game two started out with the Pioneers grabbing a 1-0 lead in the
third inning, taking the lead on a DeVincenzi double to left field.
DeVincenzi's double allowed left fielder Kristin Breninger
came around to score after jacking a double to right field.
The Pirates answered back in the top of the next inning scoring two
runs on two hits and two errors. L&C earned those two runs back
in the bottom half of the inning, starting off with Mullins second
home run of the day. Mullins led off the inning with a solo home
run over the left field fence. Laura Parker followed Mullins with a
single to right field and eventually came around to score on a
double to right field by Sheree Muira.
Kerr regained the lead for her team after following up with a home
run of her own. Kerr's shot over the outfield fence brought
in Parr. Lewis & Clark tried to recapture the lead, but
wouldn't be able to pull within reach as the Pirates put up two
more runs in the seventh.
The Pioneers and Pirates return to action on Saturday, April 11 at
the Houston Sports Complex in doubleheader Northwest Conference
action. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
