PORTLAND, Ore., - Vincent Groot improved his
individual Northwest Conference record to 3-1 on Saturday afternoon
at the Tennis Dome, as he defeated Jamie Hosmer (6-1, 6-3) of Puget
Sound from the No. 1 singles spot. Despite Groot's victory it
wasn't enough to lift the Lewis & Clark men's
tennis team over UPS, as the Pioneers dropped a 6-3 decision to the
Loggers to fall to 2-7 on the season.
The Pioneers other two points would come in doubles action, with
Groot and teammate Peter Ray taking down Hosmer and Nick Kelley 8-4
from the No. 1 spot. Luke Wheeler and Matthias Kullowatz grabbed
the Pioneers other point at the No. 2 spot picking up an 8-3 win
over Alex Harrison and Carl Larson.
Wheeler would fight to earn a singles point for the team, battling
Harrison from the No. 2 singles spot, falling in the tie-breaker of
the first set 7-6 (7-3) before slipping in the second set 6-0.
Ray's singles match would take three sets to decide a winner,
after he battled back from a 2-6 loss against Sam Finkleman in the
first set to pick up a 6-4 second set win. Finkleman would get the
better of Ray in the third and final set, winning 6-1.
The Pios return to the court on Sunday, March 8 at 12 p.m. as they
head to Portland State.
