NEWBERG, Ore., - The Lewis & Clark women's basketball
team dropped its road contest to Northwest Conference leader George
Fox on Friday night, losing by a final score of 78-56. The
Pioneers fall to 9-11 on the season and 3-8 in league play, while
the Bruins improve to a perfect 20-0 overall and 11-0 in the
NWC.
The Pioneers were led by Kim Kittell who was tied with Bruin guard
Sage Indendi for a game-high 15 points. Kittell took control of the
game early to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead, before hitting another
wide open 3-pointer minutes later to extend her teams lead to 6-4.
All together the Pioneers would knock down seven first half three
pointers, while taking 19 shots from behind the arc in the first
half alone.
The two teams would remain close throughout the first half of the
period with junior Kelly Vega hitting a shot from long range to
knock the Bruin lead to 19-17 with just over 10 minutes remaining
in the half. It wouldn't take long for the Bruins to take
charge of the game and show why they are were recently ranked 5th
in the latest WBCA national poll and 6th in the D3hoops.com poll,
and remain one of only two unbeaten teams left in the NCAA Division
III. George Fox would end up going on a 10-0 run late in the half,
to eventually ride a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
The second half would be all Bruins as the Pioneers were unable to
take control of the scoreboard or pull any closer than 12 the
remainder of the game.
Kittell was the team leading scorer with 15, while Christina
Herring netted 12 points and collected five assists. Margaret
Dowling had a game-high 10 rebounds, nine of which came on the
defensive end of the court.
Indendi was George Fox's leading scorer with 15 points, while
teammate Kristen Shielee had the games only double-double.
As a team the Pioneers shot .281 (18-64) from the floor and .500
(11-22) from behind the charity stripe. The Bruins ended the game
shooting .531 (26-49) from the floor and .677 (21-31) from the free
throw line.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. for a NWC
matchup with Pacific (Ore.) in Forest Grove.
