LOS ANGLES, Calif. – It was a good night
for the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team, as the
Pioneers cruised to a 71-59 victory over the Occidental Tigers on
Friday night as part of the Tiger/Poet Challenge, improving to 6-1
on the season.
In the first half the Tigers (5-1) jumped on top early, leading by
five points with 15:37 remaining on the clock. The Pioneers were
able to chip away at the Tiger advantage, taking control of the
lead two minutes later on a successful jumper by Megan Spence. The
two sides would swap control of the lead six more times in the
half, with the Pioneers taking control for good with a little more
than three minutes remaining. A made jumper by sophomore Neva
Hauser in the final five seconds of the half gave the Pios a 39-29
lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Pioneers continued to apply pressure,
never relinquishing control of the scoreboard. A free-throw by
Christina Herring with 13:08 on the clock increased the Pioneer
lead to 15 points, while a Herring assist just two minutes later
gave the Pios a 57-40 lead. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 20
points on a Herring jumper with three quarters of the period
expired. The Tigers were able to earn some points back on a couple
of jumpers by Dior Williams and Laura Mohler but it would not be
enough for the comeback, giving the Pios a 71-59 victory.
The Pioneers were led by a game-high 16 points and game-high 13
rebounds from Hauser. Spence also ended with a double-double,
finishing with 10 points and 10 assists, while Kristina Williams
chipped in 14 points in the Pios victory.
The Tigers received 13 points from both Mohler and Stephanie
Babij, while Williams ended with 12 points.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. when
they take on California Lutheran.
