PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
volleyball team improved its record to 14-10 overall and 10-5 in
the Northwest Conference after cruising past Linfield College, 3-0,
on Friday night in the Pamplin Sports Complex.
The Pioneers overpowered the Wildcats from the outset and never
looked back, winning the sets by scores of 25-21, 25-16, and
25-16.
The Wildcats dropped to 8-14 overall and 5-10 in league play.
With the first set tied 20-20, the Pioneers picked up three
consecutive points on Wildcat attacking errors, making the game
23-20. Katherine Fiedler closed the set with a hard kill with an
assist from Leia Matsunaga.
The Pioneers opened the second set with on a 3-0 run before the
Wildcats fought back to take a 5-4 advantage. The lead would be
short lived for Linfield as the Pioneers put together an 11-3 run
later in the set to take a 17-9 lead. A kill by Becca Lewis cut the
Pioneer lead to 23-16, but it would be a little too late as the
Pioneers collected the final two points for the 25-16 victory.
The third and final set started very similar to the second set,
with the Pioneers picking up an early lead just to lose it. A
string of serves from Matsunaga would get the Pioneers back in the
set, propelling the Pios to a 15-9 advantage. The Pios would not
look back the rest of the set, strolling to a 25-16 win.
Fiedler had another strong outing as she tallied a game-high 10
kills and a solid hitting percentage of .389. Matsunaga racked up a
game-high 20 assists, while junior libero Lou Ohki chipped in 14
digs.
Samantha Lau was all over the court for the Wildcats, coming up
with a match-high 18 digs, while contributing two service aces.
Emily Vuylsteke ended with nine kills for Linfield, while Emily
Carpenter had 14 assists.
With the victory the Pioneers move into a two-way tie for third
place in the NWC with cross-town rival George Fox. The Pioneers
have a rough season finale ahead of them, as they are set to host
the NWC Regular Season Champion Pacific Lutheran Lutes. The two
teams will match-up on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Pamplin
Sports Complex.
