TACOMA, Wash. – In its battle for first
place the Lewis & Clark volleyball team came up short, falling
to Northwest Conference leader Pacific Lutheran on Friday night.
The Lutes swept the Pioneers, 25-17, 25-15, 25-18, to remain
perfect in NWC conference play, while the Pioneers fall to 9-7
overall and 5-2 in conference.
The Lutes jumped ahead early, running up to an 11-4 advantage,
before the Pioneers fought their way back into the set. Junior
Katherine Fiedler and sophomore Margaret Dowling helped the Pios
pull within four points at 14-10. After allowing the Pios to pull
within four the Lutes buckled down to take the set 25-17.
It was more of the same for the Lutes in the second set, scoring
the first nine points of the set, before racking up a 17-6 lead.
PLU would go onto take the set 25-15. The Pioneers did their best
to challenge the Lutes in the third set, collecting five
consecutive points, four of which came on freshman Jennifer
Dowdy's serve, to take a 9-4 lead. The Lutes came back to tie
the set 16-16 before finishing the set with a 25-18 victory.
Dowdy and Fiedler both finished with a team-high eight kills, while
freshman Elena Hoff collected 12 digs.
The Lutes were led by Beth Hanna who had a game-high 12 kills,
while Brenna Archibald had 12 digs.
The Pioneers return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
when they head to Linfield for another NWC match-up.
