FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
volleyball team defeated the Pacific Boxers with ease on Saturday
night, taking the Boxers down in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-9,
25-17, in Northwest Conference volleyball action.
The Pioneers did not allow the Boxers to find any offensive
rhythm, allowing them to hit just .029 on the night. The Boxers
fall to 7-15 overall and just 2-12 in the NWC, while the Pioneers
improve to 13-10 on the season and 9-5 in the conference, which
keeps them in sole possession of fourth place in the NWC.
The Pioneers made sure to never trail in the first set, running
out to an early 14-4 lead courtesy of a kill by Jessamy Holland. A
service ace by freshman Jennifer Dowdy made the score 21-11
Pioneers, while a service error by the Boxers sealed the 25-14 win
for the Pioneers.
The second set was all Pioneers, with the team displaying why they
are one of the Northwest Conference's top teams. The squad
pulled away from a 1-1 tie to score 17 of the next 18 points in the
set. The Pios earned six points off of serves by Holland, which
included two kills from Dowdy for a 6-1 lead. Sophomore Margaret
Dowling strung together 11 more points on serves for the Pios, four
of which were off service aces, to surge to a dominating 17-2
advantage. The Pioneers would eventually cruise to the 25-9
win.
The third and final set started different that the first two, with
the Boxers opening with a 7-4 lead on L&C attack errors.
Pacific eventually ran up a 14-8 advantage before the Pioneers
began their comeback. The Pios, led by Sarah Hall, cut the lead to
17-15, before winning the next 10 points to close out the
match.
Holland's, who was the only player with double digit kills,
led the Pioneers with 10 kills. Freshman setter Leia Matsunaga led
the Pios with 31 assists, while Hall had 12 digs.
Kelsy Takashima, Alexa Block and Keleigh Kremers each had six
kills for the Boxers, while Jade Thompson added 15 digs.
The Pioneers return home for their next contest, hosting Linfield
on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Pamplin Sports Complex.
