SPOKANE, Wash. – With a convincing 3-1 win
over the Whitworth Pirates on the road Saturday night, the Lewis
& Clark volleyball team moved into a three-way tie for second
place in the Northwest Conference standings. The Pioneers took out
the Pirates 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, and 25-7.
The Pioneers improve to 12-9 on the season and 8-4 in conference
play, while the Pirates slip to 9-14 and 5-7 in NWC play. With the
victory the Pioneers finished the season with a sweep of the
Pirates in conference play.
The Pirates jumped to an early 8-0 lead and appeared to be on pace
to pick up a victory in the first set, courtesy of five Pioneer
attacking errors. The Pioneers eventually composed themselves and
began to chip away at the Pirate lead, pulling within 10-8 on a
kill by freshman Jennifer Dowdy. With a huge double block by
Katherine Fiedler and Jessamy Holland, the Pios took a 14-11 lead.
Once L&C captured the lead there was no looking back as the
team cruised to a 25-19 victory.
Lewis & Clark carried the momentum from the first set into the
second, running up a 7-3 lead on consecutive kills by Fiedler. The
Pirates however, found a way to overcome the Pioneer offensive
charge, putting together a 7-0 rally, allowing them to earn their
first lead of the set. The two sides traded control of the lead
five times before the Pirates went up 21-20 and eventually 25-23
for the win.
The third set started off as a back and forth battle before
Whitworth went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. As they've
done all season, the Pioneers found a way to fight their way back
into the set, bouncing back with a 10-1 run of their own, to earn
an 18-14 lead. The Pioneers eventually captured the 25-19 victory
on a Margaret Dowling kill.
Lewis & Clark was all business in the fourth set, going on a
10-0 run, giving them a 17-5 advantage, before making a final 8-0
run for the victory.
Fielder led the Pioneers in kills with 16, while adding five
blocks. Freshman Leia Matsunaga ended her night with 50 assists.
Holland's ended with a match-high seven blocks.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. when
they host Willamette in a NWC contest.
