PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark Pioneers dropped a
3-0 Northwest Conference decision to the Puget Sound Loggers who
are currently ranked 22nd in the nation. The Loggers defeated the
Pioneers by the final scores of 25-22, 25-18, 26-24.
The Pioneers fall to 10-9 on the season and 6-4 in the NWC, while
the Loggers improve to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in conference
action.
Both defenses played well in the first set with the Pioneers
holding the Loggers to a .190 hitting percentage, while hitting
just .149 themselves. Despite having more attacking opportunities
than the Loggers in the first set, the Pioneers were unable to put
their chances away, falling 25-22.
The second set belonged to Puget Sound who hit .382 to cruise to a
25-18 win. The final set proved to be a battle of wills with the
Pioneers coming from behind to challenge the Loggers point for
point in the closing moments. The two sides swapped possession of
the lead on a couple of occasions before the Loggers were able to
close their victory on an error by the Pios.
Junior middle hitter Katherine Fiedler ended the match with a
game-high 10 kills, while freshman setter Leia Matsunaga added 30
assists, while picking up two kills of her own.
The Loggers were led by Kalli Kamphaus and Sophie DeWitt who both
had 10 kills on the night, while Stephanie Harvey had 28
assists.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Oct. 23 when they take
on Whitman on the road at 7 p.m.
