PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark volleyball team dropped an
intense battle with the George Fox Bruins on Wednesday night in
Pamplin Sports Complex by the final score 3-1. The Pioneers
captured the first set 25-14, before dropping the final three sets
16-25, 21-25, 23-25.
With the victory George Fox improves to 14-3 on the season and 7-2
in the Northwest Conference, moving them into sole possession of
second place. The Pioneers slip to third place with an overall
record of 10-8 and 6-3 in conference play.
The Pioneers came out strong in the first set, cruising to a 25-14
victory to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bruins battled in the second
set, bouncing back to win the set 25-16.
The third set saw the Bruins jump out to a 20-12 lead before the
Pioneers dug deep to close the gap to two points, 21-19. The late
L&C rally did little to rattle the Bruins who went on to take
the set 25-21.
The fourth set was an even tighter battle with the two sides tying
the score six times. George Fox opened the set with a 3-0 run and
did not give up the lead until a service ace by senior Sarah Hall
tied the set 18-18. The two teams then matched each other point for
point until the Bruins reached match point with a 24-23 lead. An
ace by Lyndsay Hovee on match point sealed the contest for the
Bruins.
Sophomore Margaret Dowling ended the match with a match-high 15
kills, while junior Katherine Fiedler ended with 13. Freshman
setter Leia Matsunaga ended her night with 42 assists, while Lou
Ohki had 14 digs.
Hovee had a match-high 15 kills for the Bruins, while Ali
Toedtemeier contributed 19 assists. Jennifer Panico had 16 digs on
the night.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Oct. 16 when they host
Puget Sound at 7 p.m.
