In their third match of the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament in
Claremont, California, the Pioneers fell to the Chapman Panthers 25-18, 25-15,
25-14.
Kelsey Clark (senior, Eagle Creek, Ore.) had the strongest match
among the Pioneers, logging six kills and a pair of block assists.
The Pioneers fell 15-25, 25-30, 25-19,
25-15 to the Pomona Sagehens in the tournament finale.
After a very rough early match against Chapman, the Pioneers
seemed to have found their grove early in the Pomona match. The
Pioneers used a pair of strong kills by Katherine Fiedler
(freshman, San Diego, Calif.) early to take the lead in the first
set. Fiedler also closed out the set with back-to-back kills to
give the Pioneers a 25-15 victory.
In the second set, however, the host-team Pomona jumped out to a
6-0 lead, taking away all of the Pioneers momentum. The Pioneers
found themselves down 20-10, but they clawed their way back into
the set. Kills by Katherine Fiedler and Jessamy Holland (junior,
Honolulu, Hawaii) pulled the Pioneers within four, 23-19, but a
couple of key Pomona kills heleped close out a 25-20 victory.
The third set was tied 14-14, but Pomona caught fire, outscoring
the Pioneers 11-5 down the stretch to secure a 25-19 victory. The
Sagehens road the momentum through the final frame, downing the
Pioneers 25-15 to earn the 3-1 victory.
In the two matches, Katherine Fiedler had 17 kills, three
solo blocks, and 10 block assists. Margaret Dowling (freshman,
Burlingame, Calif.) had 19 kills and 15 defensive digs, including a
double-double performance against Pomona where she had 14 kills and
10 digs. Kelsey Clark had 11 kills combined in the two matches.
