The Pioneer softball team was swept in three games against the
Pacific Boxers Sunday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex, with
the Boxers winning 17-3 (box score), 13-0 (box score) and
9-0 (box
score). The two teams made up their rained out game from
Saturday afternoon after completing their scheduled double header.
Nathalie Matson hit her first career home run in game one for the
Pioneers.
In game one, the Boxers jumped out to a six-run lead in the
first inning, taking advantage of Pioneer pitching woes and using
three hits, including a two-RBI single by Brooke Fogwell. The
Boxers scored another three runs in the second, with Fogwell
driving in another two runs on her second single of the game. In
the third inning, the Boxers scored their tenth run of the game
when the Pioneers' pitcher walked in a run with the bases loaded.
The Boxers scored one more in the fourth before exploding for six
runs in the fifth inning, four of them coming on a single swing of
the bat, a grand slam home run by Carrie Maerz, her first home run
of the season.
The Pioneers' Nathalie Matson (grad, Astoria, Ore.) led off the
bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, the first home run in
Matson's collegiate career and her first hit of the season. Singles
by Sheree Miura (junior, Waipahu, Hawaii) and Paige McFeeley
(freshman, Boise, Idaho) helped the Pioneers plate two more runs,
but it was too little too late as the Pioneers bowed 17- in a
shortened five-inning contest.
In game two, Pacific's Kristen Croxford led off the game with a
double, coming home to score on a double from Kaitlin Mastenbroek
to go up 1-0. In the second inning, the Boxers extended the lead to
3-0, with Amy Walters advancing to third, coming around to score on
an errant pickoff attempt at third, and Alicia Hawes advancing to
third and then stealing home. After scoring an unearned run in the
third, the Boxers' opened the fourth inning with a double from
Hawes, a single from Jessie Garcia, and a triple from Kristen
Croxford. They added three more hits in the inning to add four runs
to the scoreboard and take an 8-0 lead. In the fifth inning, they
scored five runs on five hits, including a triple by Katilin
Mastenbroek and a two-run home run to deep left center field by
Alicia Hawes to earn a 13-0 victory in five innings.
In the final game, the Boxers extended a 4-0 lead with a five run
fifth inning, sending nine batters to the plate, slapping five hits
in the inning, including a 2-RBI double by Alicia Hawes. Pitcher
Miranda McNealy faced just one over the minimum in her
complete-game victory, allowing just one walk while no-hitting the
Pioneers over the five innings in her 9-0 victory.
For the Boxers on the afternoon, Brooke Fogwell and Caitlin
Mastenbroek each logged eight hits for the Boxers. Fogwell drove in
seven runs, scoring four. Mastenbrookhad two doubles and a triple.
Alicia Hawes had two doubles and a home run, driving in six runs on
five hits, scoring six runs. Andrea Bansen earned a pair of wins as
a pitcher, working eight innings, allowing six hits, three earned
runs, walking four, and striking out nine. Miranda McNealy worked
seven innings, no-hitting the Pioneers, striking out ten, and
walking two.
For the Pioneers, Karyne Sander and Nathalie Matson had
extra-base hits for the Pioneers. Nathalie Matson led the Pioneer
pitchers with six strikeouts in seven innings of work over two
games.
The Boxers move into a first-place tie with the Linfield
Wildcats, improving to 15-1 (9-1 NWC). The Pioneers fall to 1-14
(1-11 NWC).
The Pioneers will head to Eugene on Tuesday for a double header
against Northwest Christian.
